Reefer Madness

By [unknown]

The Case Footlighters are thrilled to present their Fall 2006 production, Reefer Madness: The Musical. This "ridiculously funny" story, based on the 1936 black and white film of the same name, chronicles the downfall of Jimmy Harper (Stephen Stumphauzer), a wholesome, all-American boy who succumbs to the deadly pull of the "demon weed" marijuana.

Jimmy's girlfriend Mary Lane (Celia Gendler) is a pure and innocent teenage girl, at least in Act I. As the second number of the show states, Mary and Jimmy are just like Romeo and Juliet. The musical is expertly narrated by The Lecturer (Jeffrey T. Verespej), a zealous purveyor of anti-marijuana propaganda.

Reefer Madness is sure to be a hit following the success of Footlighters' last production, Footloose, which broke audience records for the group.

"It's [Reefer Madness] freakin' hilarious; you'll pee my pants watching it," said Stumphauzer. The show features cameos by such historical and fictional figures as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jesus, Lady Liberty, Uncle Sam, and many others. There is also a slew of teenage reefer zombies and drug-crazed jungle lust spirits. A talented cast under the direction of Bria DuPont is coming together well in their last few rehearsals before performances begin.

The show is a mix of comedy, love, and completely over-the-top song and dance numbers.

Performances will be in Carlton Commons, October 26-28 at 8 p.m. with a special 11:59 p.m. show on October 28. Tickets are $5 and may be reserved at http://footlighters.case.edu or purchased at the door.
